studies<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">natural products chemistry<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">at the University<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of Quebec at<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Chicoutimi<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">(UQAC<\/span>), I <span class=\"hps\">had the opportunity to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">publish a few<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">articles related to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the topic<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of my research.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Today,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">I present the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">first<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of them, it<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">deals with a<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">new method for<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">analysis of volatile<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">compounds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">from<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">plant material<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps atn\">&#8220;<\/span>Volatile <span class=\"hps\">compounds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">foliage<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of balsam fir<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Analyzed by<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">static<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">headspace<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">gas chromatography<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">(HS-<\/span>GC): An example <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the spruce budworm<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">defoliation<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">effect<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the boreal forest<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of Quebec<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">Canada&#8221;<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">published in the journal<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Michrochemical<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\">Using<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the traditional method<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of analysis by<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">GC-<\/span>MS analysis of <span class=\"hps\">volatile compounds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">during my<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">study would have been<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a tedious process<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">manipulation<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the laboratory.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">This method<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">requires<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a<\/span> first <span class=\"hps\">step of extracting the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">compounds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of interest<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and then <\/span><span class=\"hps\">the<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">analysis of them<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Having<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">so<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">many samples<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">analyze<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">for my research<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">(about 200<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">for this component)<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the development<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of this method by<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">HS-<\/span><span class=\"atn\">GC (<\/span>Static <span class=\"hps\">Headspace<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Gas<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Chromatography)<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">was<\/span> necessary<span class=\"hps\">.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">My<\/span> M<span class=\"hps\">aster Degree was<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">already<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">divided into three<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">separate<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">components<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">analysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and just<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">by itself<\/span>, it <span class=\"hps\">could have been<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the sole object of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">my<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\">The<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">HS-<\/span>GC <span class=\"hps\">method<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">differs from the one<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">normally<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">used<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">(<\/span>by <span class=\"hps\">GC<\/span>-MS) <span class=\"hps\">by<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">eliminating the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">step of extracting the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">volatile compounds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and the addition of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a step of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">preheating the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">sample<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">This preheating<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">allows<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">volatile compounds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to break free<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the initial matrix<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and concentrate<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the headspace<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the bottle<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">containing the sample.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Then, the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">principles of analysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the compounds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the same<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">as gas chromatography<\/span>, they are<span class=\"hps\">\u00a0explained<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in a post<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">previously<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">done by my<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">colleague<\/span>: Analyses <span class=\"hps\">by<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">GC<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">&#8211; Part<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">I. Principles<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of separation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\">The<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">HS-<\/span>GC <span class=\"hps\">method<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">has<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">saved me<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a lot of time<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and ultimately, get<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">a reliable analysis<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">For my<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">study<\/span>, the interest <span class=\"hps\">compounds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">were<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">monoterpenes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">sesquiterpenes.<\/span> They are a\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">major<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">part<\/span> of<span class=\"hps\">\u00a0essential oils<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">known to be<\/span> the defense<span class=\"hps\">\u00a0of<\/span> the <span class=\"hps\">plants. <\/span><span class=\"hps\">These<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are already<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">well known<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span><span class=\"hps\">\u00a0listed in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the litterature and several<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">databases<\/span>, it was <span class=\"hps\">possible for me to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">easily<\/span><span class=\"hps\"> identify<\/span><span class=\"hps\">\u00a0each<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">compound present in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">my samples<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">by their<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">retention index<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\">The difficulty in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">applying the method<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">lay in finding<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">the right amount of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">sample<\/span> to include in the bottles\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">and then<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">the proper<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">warm-up time<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">so that<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">GC<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">column<\/span> would<span class=\"hps\"> not get saturated<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">by<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">volatiles.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Once these are<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">found<\/span>, it was necessary <span class=\"hps\">to make sure that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the method could<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">provide<\/span> more than <span class=\"hps\">an alternative<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">quickly identify the volatile compounds in <\/span><span class=\"hps\">a<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">plant sample<\/span><span class=\"hps\">, but<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">also be able<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to quantify these<\/span> <span <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">specific<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">molecules<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">such as<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">\u03b2<\/span><span class=\"atn\">&#8211;<\/span>phellandrene <span class=\"hps atn\">(<\/span>monoterpene), <span class=\"hps\">an internal<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">standard<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">(<\/span>geraniol) <span class=\"hps\">and a commercial<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">standard<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">(<\/span>for <span class=\"hps\">the preparation of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a calibration curve<\/span>) <span class=\"hps\">were used<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Furthermore<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">to ensure<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">stability of the method<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">each sample was<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">prepared and analyzed<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in triplicate.<\/span> T<span class=\"hps\">he injection of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a single sample<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">several times<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">could not<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">be<\/span> done <span class=\"hps\">due to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the preheating step<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">samples<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Similar results<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">have been<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">obtained, it<\/span><span class=\"hps\">\u00a0suggest that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the method<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">seems to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">be as reliable as<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">those<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">traditionally used<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"hps\">In addition,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">some preliminary results<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of my research on<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the influence of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">spruce<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">budworm<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">(SBW<\/span>) <span class=\"hps\">(Choristoneura<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">fumiferana<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Clemens<\/span>) on the chemical <span class=\"hps\">composition<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of balsam fir<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">have also<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">been included<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in this article.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">These<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">data demonstrated<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">among other<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">defoliation,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">this conifer<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">needles<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the wild<\/span> had <span class=\"hps\">an impact on<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the production of the<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"hps\">defensive compounds<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">(<\/span>monoterpenes, <span class=\"hps\">sesquiterpenes<\/span>, etc). <span class=\"hps\">In connection with these<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">results<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">the hypothesis that an<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">increased production<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">\u03b2<\/span><span class=\"atn\">&#8211;<\/span>phellandrene <span class=\"hps atn\">(<\/span>monoterpene) <span class=\"hps\">by<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">fir needles<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">during<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">severe<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">defoliation<\/span> in the <span class=\"hps\">period<\/span> of<span class=\"hps\">\u00a0June<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">was also<\/span> <span
