This plant must be eat with moderation, because an high consumption of its essential oil (present in leaves) can be toxic for human.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_777\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-777\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-777\" src=\"\/\/phytochemia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/20140913_135212-750x422.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 2 : Wintergreen in its natural environment.\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"legende\"><strong>Figure 2 :<\/strong> Wintergreen in its natural environment.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only two kinds of Gaultheria are present in Quebec. Gaultheria <em>procumbens<\/em> (L.) is identified by the common name &#8220;Wintergreen&#8221; and\u00a0 it is better known and more research has been developed on the antibacterial activity of its essential oil<sup>2<\/sup> than G. <em>hispidula<\/em>. Both plants are also known to contain methyl salicylate in their fruit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\"><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\" data-blogger-escaped-style=\"font-size: small;\"><span class=\"hps\"> This compound is found to be a good pain reliever and a natural anti-inflammatory<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A study in 2009 on various plants and trees in the boreal forest has shown that extracts of leaves of G. <em>hispidula<\/em> had an interesting antidiabetic activity in vitro<sup>4<\/sup> . This research was made in collaboration with many scientifics from Montreal and Ontario and they found that the leaf extract analyzed contained several interesting phenolic compounds (catechin, taxifolin, myricetin, etc.)<sup>4<\/sup>.
